There are three kinds of machining methods for graphite electrode: pressure vibration method, numerical control automatic forming method and machining method.
1) Pressurized vibration method: the pressurized vibration method requires a special machine tool, and the electrode master mold is opposite to the electrode shape. Graphite materials and forming tools are placed relative to each other during processing, leaving a certain gap. The processing fluid, which is a mixture of water and abrasive, is injected into the surface. At the same time, the ultrasonic vibration of graphite and forming tool occurs. Under the action of abrasive impact, graphite is peeled off to the desired shape. The abrasive is SiC, B4C or diamond. The coarser the abrasive, the faster the machining speed. Sealing type and water curtain type are used for machining when the machine tool is working. EDM is suitable for mass production.
2) NC automatic forming method: the NC automatic forming method requires a special graphite electrode forming machine. It adopts the NC method, with automatic tool exchange device, and can accommodate multiple tools. In order to improve the processing environment, the graphite electrode is surrounded by water curtain to prevent the graphite dust from dispersing everywhere. In addition, wet machining method can also be used to prevent tool wear and graphite dust flying away by water-soluble cutting fluid. The machine tool has a high-performance filtering device, which can separate the cutting fluid and graphite chips, and ensure long-term continuous processing. It is an ideal special equipment for graphite electrode processing, suitable for die electrode processing. But its price is high, and it is not widely used in China.
3) Machining method: the machining method is the main method adopted by the domestic general mold production units.
Graphite materials can be processed by turning, milling, drilling and grinding. In addition, graphite materials are easy to produce fly ash during machining, which brings adverse effects on processing equipment and operators.

1) Graphite immersion. Before machining, the graphite material should be immersed in the engine oil for tens of hours, so that the oil can penetrate into the graphite material, so that the ash powder will not fly during machining, and a smooth surface can be obtained.
2) Paint scribe. After rough machining of the electrode surface, spray a thin layer of white paint on the marking surface and then mark, so that the line is clear and convenient for machining.
